In a shocking turn of events just before the Maharashta assembly elections the Pune City Police has seized a van transporting gold old jewellery worth Rs 138 crore. The van has been seized during on a check post at Sahkar Nagar and the Election Commission Officer and the Income Tax Department have been informed about it. Further action will be taken by both these departments claimed the police.
The van from which the gold ornaments were transported belongs ‘Sequel Global’ company located at Hosur in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu. It has branches all over the country and is a leading company in the distribution of diamonds and gold jewellery. It is a leading company in transportation of gold, silver, diamonds raw material as well as finished jewelery to different cities within the country.
According to the police, a fixed checkpoint was set up at Padmavati on the occasion of the assembly elections. The van arrived there around 9 am near the chekpoint. The police at the checkpoint got suspicious and asked the driver to stop. When the police checked the container at the back of the, the witnessed white boxes inside the van. When the driver of the van was questioned about the boxes he said that there were gold ornaments in it and also had the documents regarding that. After calculating the value of the ornaments, the police officials stationed at the check-post escalated the matter to the senior officers. Later the Election Commission officials, Income Tax Department officials also visited the spot. The van was brought to the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police Swargate Division.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Smartana Patil said, “the van was stopped as the police on the checkpost got suspicious. A look inside revealed boxes packed in white sacks. After inquiring about this, the driver said that there were gold ornaments in it. The receipts reveled the value of the gold ornaments to be worth Rs 138 crores. The seized goods has been handed over to Income Tax officials and Election Commission officials for further investigations. The white bag is sealed and the police have not checked whether there is anything else in it. Income tax officer and election commission officer will take further action.”
Further investigations reveled that these ornaments were transported to Pune from Mumbai. The case is under further probe by the Income Tax and Election Commission authorities.
